Car was totaled, unsure what to do with license plates (Virginia)

The DMV website is not super helpful.

Tried to drop the car from insurance today only they said in Virginia, I'yard required to surrender the license plates first to the DMV before they tin have the automobile off insurance. But tin can't I only hold onto the plates and transfer them to our new car once we go it? I come across on the DMV website that I tin put the plates on a temporary agree if I'm going to drib the vehicle from insurance. And then could I put them on hold, drop the vehicle, and so when we become a new motorcar (hopefully adjacent week), have the dealer put those plates on the new car? Is a dealer able to do that? I imagine they'd merely have to modify out the registration stickers right? When we bought a car a couple of years ago, we traded i in and they just did any they do with their paperwork and transferred the plates for us right there at the dealer. Am I better off merely doing nada right now with the plates and insurance and waiting til we get a new car? I am afraid if I put the plates on hold we'll run into problems at the dealership when we enquire them to re-issue those plates to the new motorcar.

I don't actually get how information technology all works.

Too, somewhat related...when I donated a car years ago, I was told I could continue my plates once they were mailed back to me. They're withal in my posession somewhere. Do I need to plough those in??? The DMV has never said anything to me. It'south been nigh five years. I reported the car donated to the DMV website and so they know I no longer ain the motorcar.

OP once again -

Under instructions on selling/donating automobile, DMV website says this:

If the plates are non transferred to some other vehicle, yous may render them to whatsoever DMV customer service center for recycling or destroy and dispose of them yourself.

Meanwhile, on another page titled "Give up of License Plates" it says this:

Sold, traded, or no longer operate your vehicle? Moved out of Virginia?

If then, Virginia Code section 46.2-707 requires you to immediately surrender your license plates and/or vehicle registration to the nearest DMV client service center.

And so, conflicting info. Not to mention, I didn't sell, trade, or donate my car...I totaled it. So I don't even know how to notify the DMV that the machine is no longer in my posession since that's not fifty-fifty an choice on their website.

Just have/post them to the DMV. Not that difficult.

You need to turn in the license plate and transfer the title to your insurance. If your car is totaled your insurance is disposing of the car. So now the insurance owns the car, but not until the title is transferred.

If you do not transfer title and plough in the license plate to DMV you should wait to go along to accrue the auto taxation on that vehicle fifty-fifty if information technology's totaled. Your insurance agent should have explained this to you.

BTDT.

Hm, I'm trying to remember exactly how this worked but I definitely kept my last plates when my car was totaled last yr and the dealer just put them on the new auto.

Transfer & Surrender VA Tags

If you purchase a vehicle and already have Virginia license plates, you can transfer your plates when yous register the new vehicle. Both vehicles must be in your name.

You must surrender your tags if you:

Movement to another land.
Trade, sell, or donate your vehicle and don't transfer the tags to another vehicle.
OR
Plan to abolish your insurance and terminate operating your vehicle.
Surrender the tags Earlier canceling your insurance.
You can also apply for a refund if y'all accept at least 6 months left on your registration. Y'all will need to complete an Application for a Vehicle Registration Refund (Form FMS 210).

Surrender your tags and submit your refund application (if applicative):

In person at a DMV service heart.
OR
By mail to:
Registration Renewal Work Center
Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 27412
Richmond, VA 23269

Yous can transfer tags from one vehicle to another if both vehicles are in your name. Yous cannot append the tags, agree onto them, get rid of the first car and wait to transfer them to another car once you buy information technology. Both cars much exist titled in your proper noun at the same fourth dimension, which is what happened to you terminal time.

If you plan to become rid of the offset car before buying the 2nd car, you must give up your tags earlier you can cancel your insurance.

So, you can hurry upward and buy a new machine quickly and transfer the license earlier the shop destroys or auctions off the automobile, or have the remains towed back to your home (if it can be) and leave it there until you buy a new machine.

Otherwise, you lot need to give up the tags and become new tags when y'all get a new car.

I've kept all of our old plates. They've become a backsplash betwixt garage cabinets.
